
Banana Slugs Fall to No. 21 Sewanee on Saturday Afternoon

SANTA CRUZ, Ca. - The UC Santa Cruz men's tennis team fell to No. 21 Sewanee 5-2 at their home opener on Saturday afternoon. Losing the doubles point and clinching Benjamin Wang and Rocco Melendez No. 1 doubles match at 4-4. Benjamin Wang and Caden Wong fought hard, forcing and winning the third set match at the No. 1 and No. 4 spots. The Banana Slugs will next host Occidental on March 9th at 11:00am.Â

Doubles:
- Peter Liang and Gavin Sontag fell 6-2 at No. 2 before Spencer Hidas and Caden Wong battled a close 6-4 on court three.
- The Banana Slugs and Tigers went unfinished at No. 1 doubles with Benjamin Wang and Rocco Melendez ending in 4-4.
Singles:
- Rocco Melendez dropped back to back 6-1 sets with Hari Raghavan finishing shortly after, falling in his No. 5 match at 6-3, 6-2.
- Peter Liang lost in the No. 6 spot, dropping the match 6-1, 6-2.
- In the No. 2 spot, Gavin Sontag dropped back to back 6-3 sets.
- Caden Wong forced a third set in the No. 4 match, winning the match after an unfinished third set (Sewanee Ret.) 1-6, 6-3, 0-0.
- In the No. 1 spot, Benjamin Wang prevailed forcing a third set. Wang fell 7-5 in set one before storming back to take set two 6-1. They played a tiebreaker for the third set with Wang coming away with the 10-8 win to clinch his match.
