Men’s Tennis Opens 2026-27 Season at Manoa Fall Classic

HONOLULU, HI – The UC Santa Cruz men's tennis team opened their season in three days of exhibition contests against the University of Hawaii and Hawai'i Pacific University at the Manoa Fall Classic.
Sept. 18th, 2026
Doubles:
Benjamin Wang and Rocco Melendez were defeated by Simon Knezevic and Kent Mueller (Hawaii) 8-4 to open up doubles.Â
Landon Arendt and Caden Wong lost to Adriano Dzhenev and David Knesl (Hawaii) 8-5 in the set.
Hudson Wardand Jasper Hine closed out the day in a loss to Matteo Perrod and Arthur Pery (HPU) 8-5.
Singles:
Senior Benjamin Wang lost to Adriano Dzhenev (UH) in two sets, including a second set tiebreak to finish 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
Rocco Melendez was defeated by Hikaru Takahashi (UH) in two sets at 6-2, 6-3.
Hudson Ward was overtaken by David Knesl (UH) at 6-1, 6-2.
Caden Wong lost to Ethan Chun (UH) in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (12-10).
Landon Arendt played a hard-fought battle against Ian Layton (UH) with scores of 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 in the loss.
Gavin Sonntag lost in two to Simon Knezevic (UH) with set scores of 6-3, 6-2.

Doubles:
Gavin Sonntag and Lucas Smolko opened day two of doubles in a loss against Simon Knezevic and Kent Mueller (UH) with a score of 8-3.
Hudson Ward and Jasper Hine were defeated against Ian Layton and Hikaru Takahashi (UH) in an 8-4 finish.
Landon Arendt and Caden Wong closed out with a drop to Ethan Terry and Seth Newman (HPU)Â 8-3.
Singles:
Lucas Smolko brought the first win for the Banana Slugs in a win versus Matteo Perrod (HPU) 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
Gavin Sonntag was defeated by David Knesl (UH) 6-1, 6-2.
Hudson Ward posted a tough match against Arthur Pery (HPU) in a 6-1, 6-0 defeat.
Jasper Hine lost to Simon Knezevic (UH) in two sets with scores of 6-0, 6-1.
Caden Wong swung a strong start, but couldn't finish the job in a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Ian Layton (UH).

Landon Arendt and Caden Wong lost a close fight against Ian Layton and Hikaru Takahashi (UH) 9-7.
Singles:
Benjamin Wang closed out his tournament in a loss to Soren Grandke (UH) 6-3, 6-1.
Rocco Melendez stayed strong in defeat against Matteo Perrod (HPU) 6-3, 6-4.
