SALISBURY, Md. - The UC Santa Cruz men's tennis team closed out their regular season with a thrilling 4–3 victory over the 29th-ranked Salisbury Sea Gulls on Thursday afternoon in Maryland. The Banana Slugs, ranked No. 57th nationally, secured the win by clinching four singles matches after dropping the doubles point. UC Santa Cruz will get a short break before taking on the No. 1 seeded University of Mary Washington Eagles on Saturday, May 3 at 2pm Eastern time for the C2C Men's Tennis Conference Semifinal match at Christopher Newport University.
How It Happened
In doubles play, Salisbury claimed the point by winning two of the three matches. UC Santa Cruz's No. 3 duo of
Arjun Tandon and
Praneet Varade earned a 6–4 victory, but it wasn't enough to capture the doubles point.
Trailing 1–0, the Slugs mounted a comeback in singles. At No. 1 singles,
Andrew Tjoa delivered a straight-sets victory, 6–4, 6–4.
Benjamin Wang followed with a 6–2, 6–3 win at No. 2.
Radin Sadeghi added a 6–3, 6–2 triumph at No. 4, while
Arjun Tandon secured the decisive point with a 6–2, 6–2 win at No. 5.
The victory marks UC Santa Cruz's second consecutive win over Salisbury, having previously defeated the Sea Gulls 5–3 on April 29, 2023. The Slugs now turn their attention to the postseason, carrying momentum from this hard-fought win into the upcoming conference tournament.
