Banana Slugs finish eighth at weather shortened Bay Area Invite

STOCKTON - A great second round for UC Santa Cruz's golf team went for naught as high winds called off the second round of the Bay Area Invite at Spanos Park.
In their first outing of the spring, the Banana Slugs played well against a field with eight Division II opponents, but it was the old rivalry with Mother Nature that was the deciding factor.
"The wind was blowing so hard, the balls couldn't stay on the green," said head coach Paulette Pera. "We had to pack it in."
Alyssa Yee from nearby Davis was leading the field in the second round before the tournament was canceled. She was making a dramatic improvement, but had to settle for a tie in 30th place with teammate Riley Birch. Gillian Mendoza was sixth after her first round score of 76, four shots behind Medalist Drishti Karumbaya of Cal State East Bay.
UC Santa Cruz finished eighth with a one-round score of 327, 25 shots off first place Cal State East Bay. The Banana Slugs get back in action in three weeks when they compete in George Fox's Westbrook Invitational in Arizona.
