
Shaw Leads UCSC On Day One of ASC Championships

WHITNEY, Tx. – The No. 24 UC Santa Cruz women's golf team sits in second place after Day One of the American Southwest Conference Women's Golf Championships in Texas. The Banana Slugs shot +27 as a team, just two shots off of No. 16 Mary Hardin-Baylor, fighting through rainy conditions at the White Bluff Resort.

Samantha Shaw was the standout performer for the Banana Slugs, shooting +4 for a 76 on the round to end the day in a tie for first place. Shelly Areepitak followed closely behind with a 78, giving the first year a fourth place position after the first round. Olivia Lew and Adeline Truong rounded out the top four with the duo shooting +8 and +9 to end the day in a tie for sixth and tie for eighth, respectively. Maya London and Alyssa Casellanos shot +11 and +16 with the duo ending the day in a tie for 10th and a tie for 17th.

The Banana Slugs performed the best overall on par 4s with a 4.62 average and the best on par 5s with a 5.38 average. UCSC ranked second on par 3s with a 3.33 average and led the field in pars with 52 on the day. The Banana Slugs ranked third on birdies with Shelly Areepitak tying for first in the field with three birdies on her own. Samantha Shaw led the field in pars with 12 overall.
