Group Swim Lessons

UC Santa Cruz Community Group Swim Lessons include up to four swimmers (4:1 Student: Teacher Ratio) per instructor, creating a fun and supportive environment while still allowing for individualized attention.Â

These lessons are designed to help both new and experienced swimmers build confidence, develop skills, and continue improving in the water.

 Swimmers will be assigned to their appropriate level, either beginner, intermediate, or advanced, during their initial assessment on day one.Â

Swimmers may enroll with friends or siblings, or participants can be paired with others of a similar age and skill level.
Level 1: Intro to SwimmingÂ
Class objective: Introduction to water independence and safety skills. Working on floating independently. Progression of safety skills from beginning to mastery. Introduction to freestyle technique. This level is for older students who are progressing from being uncomfortable or fearful of the water to being eager to swim and confident in the water.
Prerequisites: No prior instructional experience necessary.
Level 2: Freestyle StrokeClass objective: The swimmer has mastered water safety skills and will continue to practice in class. Can demonstrate independent swimming freestyle technique and float independently without assistance. Swimmers begin working on freestyle with side breaths and proper arm stroke.Â
Prerequisites: can do the following: Enter independently by jumping in from the side of the pool into chest-deep water. Turn around in the water, face the wall, and travel back to the wall. Roll from front float to back float on the instructor’s command and hold for 15 seconds. Use kicking equipment properly. Hold a front glide in a streamline for 2 body lengths and roll over onto their back. Swim using combined arms and leg freestyle actions.
Level 3: Backstroke/Breaststroke
Class objective: Swims freestyle with side breath proficiently. Able to swim freestyle stroke independently with proper breathing. Swimmers learn backstroke and Breaststroke
Prerequisites: Jump into deep water from the side, recover to the surface. Show coordination in the butterfly body movement. Demonstrate coordinated hand and leg movement, timing, and technique. Swim independently with proper body control and breathing. Swim freestyle proficiently

Private Swim Lessons

UC Santa Cruz Community Private Swim Lessons provide one-on-one instruction between a swimmer and instructor, allowing for fully personalized coaching and focused skill development. These lessons are designed to help swimmers of all levels build confidence, improve technique, and progress at their own pace in a supportive environment.

Private lessons are ideal for both new swimmers learning the basics and experienced swimmers looking to refine their skills.

All lessons take place at the UCSC East Field House Pool and run for 30 minutes. For pricing details, please review the table below.

Note: Group lessons are set based on the advertised schedule. Private lessons only may be customized within the month to allow more flexibility for the Instructor and the student if needed.
JUNIOR GUARD TEST SESSIONS
- Interested in joining Junior Guards within the Santa Cruz Community? Come to the UC Santa Cruz Aquatics Center and test your skills in the pool and learn what it takes to pass the test and become a Junior Guard here in Santa Cruz.
- UC Santa Cruz is offering three-day Junior Lifeguard Prep Sessions. These sessions are led by a former Junior Lifeguard Regional and National Champion, bringing high-level experience and firsthand knowledge of what it takes to succeed in the program. Swimmers will train in a focused and supportive environment designed to prepare them for Junior Lifeguard swim tryouts and program activities.
- Participants will work on swim endurance, technique, and water confidence, while also learning the skills commonly expected during junior guard training.
- Parents will leave with a clearer understanding of their swimmer’s readiness for the Junior Lifeguard swim test and areas where improvement may be needed.
