Banana Slugs ramp up postseason preperations against Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Poly SLO
SAN LUIS OBISPO - UC Santa Cruz faced Division I Cal Poly Saturday afternoon to close out their weekend excursion.
The Banana Slugs battled hard against the Mustangs. Although the hosts won every event, UC Santa Cruz got a good practice run racing against their toughest opponent all year with an eye to the Conference and NCAA Championship meets.
Highlights included the 200 Medley Relay squad of Coralie Norenberg, Megan Deevy, Maddy Gruender and Tereza Shea finishing in 1:51.60. In the 50 Free, Gruender and and Norenberg tied for second in 25.31 while Gruender won the 200 Back in 2:09.74. Massimo Reyna had a standout meet, with runner-up finishes in the men's 200 Free (1:44.01) and 100 Fly (53.08). He was also part of the runner-up 400 Free Relay quartet with Drake Southern, Briggs Cloutier and Samuel Smith.
On Friday, the Banana Slugs got in the pool against nationally-ranked Pomona-Pitzer. The women dropped their meet 195-97 while the men fell to the Sagehens 184.5-109.5.
Southern won the men's 50 Free in 21.54 and was second in the 100 Free in 47.44. Aaron Wu placed third in the 200 Fly (2:00.48) and was second in the 100 Fly (52.77). Norenberg was fourth in the 50 Free in 25:05 and second in the women's 100 Back in 1:01.13, while Elisabeth Lundgren was third in the 100 Back finishing in 1:02.84. Lundgren was also second in the 200 Back in 2:10.72 and led off the 400 Medley Relay with Deevy, Norenberg and Gruender who finished in 4:04.23.
