Banana Slugs drop close meet to host East Bay, sweep Simpson
HAYWARD - The UC Santa Cruz swimming team competed well in a Conference preview triple-meet against Cal State East Bay and Simpson University.
The Banana Slugs women were edged by the Pioneers 150-109 but beat Simpson 215-15. On the men's side, UC Santa Cruz prevailed easily over the Redhawks 163-45.
"The Slugs put together a very solid meet today at Cal State East Bay," said Head Coach Matt Crawford. "Both teams got a win over Simpson, and the women fell to one of our strongest conference opponents in East Bay."
For the women, Coralie Norenberg won both the 100 Back and 100 Free. Elisabeth Lundgren was second in the 100 Back while winning the 200. Maddy Gruender won the 200 Free. Megan Deevy took the 100 Breaststroke while Honour Dufresne won the 500 Free.
"Some highlights were Maddy Gruender getting a win in the 200 free over one of the best athletes on East Bay," Crawford said "but the swim of the day goes to Honour Dufresne, a freshman who notched her first win as a Slug in the 500 free with a bold race strategy and some major toughness at the end."
The men used their depth advantage to take 11 of the 14 events in their victory. Two Banana Slugs each won a pair of events. Adam Shaaban took both the 200 Butterfly and the 400 IM. Massimo Reyna won the 50 and 100 Freestyle sprints and also swam second on the 400 Free Relay quartet that won in 3:19.66.
"Adam put together a very nice 400 IM, edging out teammate John Madden," Crawford noted.Â
The Banana Slugs head to southern California for a pair of duals next weekend, starting on Friday the 20th at nationally ranked Pomona-Pitzer.
