WINCHESTER, VA- Abby McPhillips, the first Banana Slug field athlete to compete for an NCAA Championship, proved that indoor season doesn't mean that there is a ceiling for records.
The Senior qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the High Jump. It's the same event McPhillips competed in at the Division III Outdoor Championships last May when she finished 15th in the nation. Competing in the Pentathlon at the Shenandoah University Last Chance Meet, McPhillips cleared 1.68m, which improved on her Indoor High Jump PR by 0.01m. The extra centimeter vaulted her from 19th to 11th in the country, clinching a spot at Nationals. Overall, McPhillips finished the five events with a score of 2,891 points.
The Indoor Championships will be held next weekend in Winston Salem, North Carolina, right down the road from Greensboro where the Outdoor Championships happened. Shea Wissler was the other competitor that UC Santa Cruz took to Virginia. He competed as the first-ever UC Santa Cruz men's indoor Heptathlete, earning a two-day score of 3,844.
