Slugs Compete at the APU Franson Last Chance

AZUSA, Ca. - The UC Santa Cruz men's and women's track and field team competed against a mix of Division 1, 2, and 3 competition at the Franson Last Chance hosted by Azusa Pacific University. With only a couple more events left in the season, the Slugs prepare for the NCAA Championships starting May 23rd. Before that, the Slugs will compete in their last regular season event, the Redlands Last Chance on May 14th.Â
ÂWomen's Highlights

200m: Nia Kim started things off for the women with a 25.82, good enough for 38th place.Â

800m: Elena Stanciu led the pack with a time of 2:14.09, which landed her in 28th. Melody Chu, Jordan Robinson, and Madelyn Basinet were all in the same vicinity running a 2:19.31, 2:19.55, and 2:20.14, respectively. This landed them at 49th, 51st, and 55th.

1500: The Slugs were grouped up in the event. Lucia Muthu narrowly beat out Meeran Gill with her 4:46.11, which beat Gill's 4:47.72. They got 47th and 48th. Behind them were Jordan Robinson with a time of 4:77.52, Madelyn Basinet with a time of 4:58.47, and Hope Martin, who ran a 4:59.41.

5000: Helena Janku was the lone competitor. Her time of 18:06.44 was 33rd in the event.

100m Hurdle Prelim: Nia Kim's 14.32 led the way for the Slugs and was 12th place in the event. Olivia Marino followed with a 20th place finish and a time of 15.65. Right behind her was Eliza Zheng who ran a 15.97.

3000 Steeplechase: Cheryl Chuang anf Fiona Wolf were neck and neck. Chuang barely finished faster with a time of 11:38.50 and 26th place. The 26th place Wolf finished with a time of 11:39.51

High Jump: Eliza Zheng had a strong performance earning 12th place with a successful 1.57m jump.

Long Jump: Olivia Marino landed in 21st place with a distance of 5.14m.

Shot Put: Nia Kim launched a 9.95m which was 14th best at the event.

Men's Highlight

400m: To start the meet, Matthew Riffle earned 24th place out of 44 competitors with a time of 49.48

800m: Several Slugs competed in the event, with Caeden Gardner leading the way with a 39th-place finish and a time of 1:52.19. Sean Conley followed behind, running a 1:52.19, good for 43rd. Evan Hoffsetter was right behind in 47th with a time of 1:53.34. To round off the event, Matthew Riffle ran a 1:53.65 for 50th, Caleb Kipp had a time of 1:56.44 for 68th, and Viktor Kieturakis rounded things off with a 1:56.66, landing at 69th.

1500m: Greame Maclean finished first for the slugs with a time of 3:52.32, which was 51st in the event. Following that, there was a series of Slugs, including Camden Jaureguy with a time of 3:56.26, Gilbert Fillat ran a 3:57.72, Sean Conley with a 3:58.28, Caeden Gardner had a 3:58.42, Viktor Kieturakis ran a 4:00.02, David Olmo Marchal with a 4:13.08, and Desi Herrerias rounded things off with a 4:15.28.

5000m: Luke Holland had the standout performance of this event with an impressive 14:31.40 and 18th place. Desi Herrerias, Diego Vizcarra, and David Olmo Marchal also competed with times of 15:30.98, 15:31.30, and 15:40.96, respectively.Â

110 Hurdles Prelims: Evan Hoffsetter ran a 17.16 for 17th place.Â

Pole Vault Group B. Erik Dodge finished with the best individual placement of the weekend for the Slugs with a first-place finish in the B Group Pole Vault. He was able to clear 4.70m.

Long Jump: Tyler Vo jumped 6.07m for 27th place

Discus: Evan Hoffsetter's throw of 35.57 was good for 14th place at the event.
