Senior High Jump record holder ties best finish by a UC Santa Cruz athlete at nationals
WINSTON-SALEM - Senior Abby McPhillips made her second trip to the NCAA Championships, this time for Indoor Track and Field.
She finished 10th in the High Jump, tying Shannon McClish (2019) and Conrad Pereira (2021) as the highest-placing Banana Slugs at the National Championships.
"Making a return trip to the National Championships is never easy, so just getting back to the big meet is such an accomplishment," said head coach David Klech. "I am so proud of Abby and all of her hard work this season. She improved from a 15th place finish at the outdoor championships and was really competitive against the best runners in the country."
McPhillips, the school record holder in the High Jump, easily cleared the preliminary heights of 1.56 and 1.61 meters. She cleared 1.64m (5ft 4.5 in) on her final attempt to make it into the top ten. She became the first Banana Slug to make it to the indoor championships. She was also the first Field athlete to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which she did ten months ago just up the road in Greensboro, NC.
"A big push for us to add Indoors this year was to give our student-athletes an opportunity to compete at another National Championship," said Klech "and so we're proud of Abby for taking advantage and being the first Banana Slug ever to qualify for the NCAA indoor Championships. Now onto our outdoor season next weekend in Sacramento."
The Banana Slugs turn their focus on outdoor track when they compete at the Hornet Invitational next weekend at Sacramento State.
