
Mendoza places eighth overall, Banana Slugs fourth at Spring Invite

PACIFIC GROVE -Â Gillian Mendoza shot a 75 on the second day to lead the 24th-ranked Banana Slugs to a fourth-place finish at the UCSC Spring invitational, hosted at Pacific Grove golf links.Â
Mendoza had Sunday's fifth-best overall individual score, including a pair of birdies and an amazing chip off the green for par on the sixth to help her finish with a 13-over 157.Â
Alyssa Yee placed 14th with 162 over the two rounds. Charlotte Ruhl was 18th, three strokes back of Yee. Kristina Oh, Mikaela Paracuelles and Tani Ng each shot a 168, good for a tie for 21st. Mara Anunciacion was 30th with a 173.
Riley Birch was 35th with a 177, Dana Bryant shot a 183 to place 40th, and Bridget Nothelfer shot 21 strokes better on Day Two to finish 47th with a 195.
Overall, UC Santa Cruz took 20 strokes off their first-day score to finish with 652 as a team. Fifth-ranked George Fox won the team crown with a combined 599 over the two rounds. George Fox freshman Abby Takamiya set a new Spring Invite record with a two–day score of 139, including a three-under 69 in Sunday's second round. The Bruins' Makensie Toole hit par on both days to finish second with a 144.
Pomona Pitzer placed second with a two-day score of 619, led by Abby Euyang's third-place finish with a 6-over 150. The University of Fraser Valley finished third with a team score of 634. The Cascades were the first Canadian team to play in the Spring Invite in a decade.
The Banana Slugs next play in four weeks at the American Southwest Conference tournament in Gladewater, Texas.
