Men finish third, Banana Slugs garner 11 conference championships
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Freshman Amaya Cummins won two Conference titles and was named Athlete of the Meet at the Coast-To-Coast Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The women placed second to host Christopher Newport with 126 points. The men were third with 95.
""What an incredible weekend for Banana Slug Track & Field. As a coaching staff we were really excited about the opportunity for our student-athletes to get to compete in the Indoor season," said head coach David Klech. "We had a solid start two weeks ago in Portland, but our entire team really rose to occasion and really battled tough over the last two days."
Cummins, won both the 60 meter and 200 meter races. She won the 60 in 7.98 seconds. Amelia Tremain (8.45) and Zoe Johnson (8.56) were 6th and 7th respectively. Tremain also placed third in the 60m hurdles in 9.93.
Hana Yamamoto took the Indoor 800m title (2:24.02) with Hanna Hekkanen placing third in 2:25.56. Elana Muzzy and Ash Baudin went 1-2 in the mile.
And the 4x400 relay quartet of Yamamoto, Sophia Cervantes Llamas, Riley Martel-Phillips and Abby McPhillips won in 4:20.59, 0.67 ahead of Mary Washington.
"We brought 12 women and they all competed at an extremely high level," Klech said. "Abby and the DMR really set the tone for the women on Friday. Elana and Ash ran a tough double and did really well. Riley had a breakout weekend anchoring the DMR to victory and getting second in the 3,000m  Amaya was incredible in her second Indoor Meet ever. Zoe stepped up big time to help us in the 4x4. The Women really worked together and moved up from 4th at the Outdoor Championships to 2nd today, which is such a proud moment as a coach."
Standouts for the men included Ethan Bizzack, who won the 400 meters in 51:34. Holden Spencer won the mile in 4:21.47. Eric Jackson won the 300 meters in 8:36.76. Jonathan Stenger was second in the 60 m dash in 7.05, and Carson Nagel was third in the 800 meters, finishing in 1:58.84.
Overall the Banana Slugs won eleven conference titles.
"Jonathan getting second in the 60m was a huge performance as a freshman," Klech said. "The Men came in with a lot of youth and really competed to their potential. Holden and Eric replicated their performances from Portland and took two wins. Ethan was huge in winning the 400m from the slow heat. We had a lot of positives and are really excited to continue the momentum into the rest of the season."
The Banana Slugs have one more event before the NCAA Championships when they compete at the Seattle Pacific Invite next weekend.
