Banana Slugs swim well against Division I Mustangs to Open Spring Season

SANTA CRUZ (1-15) – The Banana Slugs took part in their first dual match of the 2021-22 season and the first meet of the spring as they hosted Division I Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at UCSC Aquatics Center.Â
Cal Poly won the dual meet overall competition 407-179, the men's competition 227-65 and the women's competition 180-114.

In the men's competition, the Banana Slugs came in the top five in all sixteen events that took place. Individually, Joel Akey (3 meter diving- 197.10 points), John Madden (200 yard freestyle- 1:45.87) and Aaron Wu (100 yard butterfly- 52.64) were the top finishers on the day, each with a second place finish. As a team, the Banana Slugs' best finish was the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Drake Southern, Victor Sowa, Sam Smith and Wu, who finished second with a time of 1:28.50.

The women's team finished all sixteen events in the top five. Individually, Zoe Gronert (100 yard breaststroke- 1:08.75), school record holder Maddy Gruender (200 yard freestyle- 1:57.49), Elisabeth Lundgren (100 yard backstroke- 1:00.93) and Vivi Raker (100 yard butterfly- 57.96) won their individual races. Megan Deevy, Elisabeth Lundgren, Vivi Raker and Tereza Shea won the 400 yard medley relay in 4:00.81, and the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Isobel Blue, Shea, Gruender and Gianna Dulong won by 0.58 seconds in 1:39.23.
Shea was also second in both the 50 Free (24.97) and 100 Free (54.94).

The next event for the Banana Slugs will be Friday January 21st as take on PCSC rival and NCAA Division II member Biola University in La Mirada at 3 pm.
