HOUSTON- No. 22 UC Santa Cruz got off to a greatstart at Day Two of the Division III National Preview. In a loaded field, however, the one opponent the Banana Slugs couldn't compete against was the weather.
Thunderstorms popped up throughout the morning at the course that will host the 2022 NCAA Championships. Every lightning bolt spotted caused a delay that required the 90 participants to clear the course for some time.
The lightning persisted, however, and time constraints forced the tournament to be called.
"We had two players under par and so much momentum," said head coach Paulette Pera. "It's a shame because we were playing with such quality."
As the second day was canceled, the first round results will stand. UC Santa Cruz finished with a 26-over 314 and was tied for eighth with York College (PA) and American Southwest Conference rival No. 14 Mary Hardin Baylor.
Riley Birch was the Banana Slugs' top performer, tying for seventh with a 2-over 74. Alyssa Yee was 32nd (78), Charlotte Ruhl was 40th (80), Mara Anunciacion placed 58th (82) and Gillian Mendoza was 83rd (89).
Top-ranked Carnegie Mellon finished first in the field of 16, which included twelve teams ranked in the latest WGCA Top 25 poll.
The Banana Slugs finish their Fall season next month at the Golfweek Invitational in Destin, Florida.
