Gillian Mendoza, Alyssa Yee finish in top half of the field at Golfweek Invite
DESTIN, FLORIDA - The 22nd-ranked UC Santa Cruz finished 16th as a team at the Golfweek Division III Invite held at Baytowne Golf Course.
The tournament featured eleven other teams ranked in the WGCA Top 25. The Banana Slugs carded a team score of 961 in the three-day event.
Junior Gillian Mendoza placed 35th out of 106 competitors with a 16-over-232. That included a three-under 69 on Day Two, tying her own mark for best score in school history as well as best round of all participants at the tournament. Alyssa Yee was 49th after shooting 236. Mara Anunciacion totaled 245 strokes, including the Banana Slugs' first Eagle of the season on the first day.
Charlotte Ruhl shot a 32-over 248, while fellow freshman Tani Ng shot a 264 in her first event as a collegian.
"We have a great team, but we all need to be playing well at the same time to turn in a winning team score" said head coach Paulette Pera. "We weren't able to do that at the Golfweek but are going to work hard to make it happen."
Sixth-ranked Emory took the team title by two strokes over Centre College. UC Santa Cruz reconvenes for the Spring portion of their season in March.
