SANTA CRUZ — Freshman Matt Skenazy came off the bench and scored in the first half, and the UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team held on for a 1-0 win over Washington University of St. Louis on Sunday to remain unbeaten.
Skenazy, one of three locals on the Slugs' roster, helped Santa Cruz improve to 3-0 overall. Star forward Bryan Baird was credited with the assist after Skenazy followed up a blocked shot by Baird in the 40th minute.
"It's a great win because it was our first real test," Slugs coach Paul Holocher said.
UCSC, ranked fifth in the nation in Division III, reached the NCAA quarterfinals last season. Washington University also qualified for postseason.
It was Skenazy's third goal of the season.
Slugs defenders Matt Marquess, Stephen Wondolowski and Alex Tocco helped junior goalie Chris Pedersen record his third straight shutout.
UCSC also has wins over Whittier, 6-0, and Cal Tech, 10-0.

Holocher credited Aaron Lanes for winning numerous balls in the midfield. "He inspires a level of play because of his winning attitude," Holocher said.
UCSC plays its first road game, taking on host Occidental College in Los Angeles, Wednesday.
Washington University (2-1), a perennial power, beat Cal State Hayward 2-0 on Friday.
Skenazy's goal was the first allowed by Washington this season.
