Banana Slugs Showcase Complete Control in 3-0 Win Against Caltech

PASADENA, Calif – The UC Santa Cruz Men's Soccer team took control over Caltech to earn a demanding 3-0 victory early Sunday morning. UCSC showcased a strong game offensively, leading 18-1 in total shots and 9-0 in shots on goal. Soren Groessl opened things up for the Banana Slugs early in the first half, with Massimiliano Oneto and Erik Moreno Herrera each finding the net in the second half to add insurance goals for the Banana Slugs. UC Santa Cruz will travel up north to Spokane for their next matchup against Whitman College on Sept. 11th at 4:30pm.
How It Happened
UC Santa Cruz seized immediate control from kickoff, earning three corner kicks within the first 13 minutes of play. Groessl took advantage of the corner kicks opportunities in the 13th minute to earn his first goal of the year, scoring on an assist from Oliver Gill. The Banana Slugs continued to force consistent pressure on Caltech's defense in the remainder of the half supported by shots on goal from Gill and Aiden Dellinger. UCSC defense came into the matchup locked in from the start and allowed only one shot attempt all game that came in the 25th minute.
The Banana Slugs kept their momentum rolling into the second half with Massimiliano Oneto taking the first shot of the half just over three minutes in. Oneto stayed aggressive offensively, leading to his first goal of his career in the 53rd minute with the assist from Teo Cristea. Two corner kicks and four shots later, Moreno Herrera found the back of the net to score the first goal of his collegiate career. UC Santa Cruz remained aggressive offensively in the final minutes of play as Gill and Dellinger took the rest of the shots for the Banana Slugs. UCSC outshot the Beavers 11-0 in the second half to put a cap on Sunday's contest.
