Scoreless Night Gives UC Santa Cruz Their First Draw of the Season

WHITTIER, Ca – The UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team recorded their first draw of the year against the Whittier College Poets late Friday Night. The Banana Slugs showcased efficient offensive efforts with four shots on goal within their total six shot attempts in comparison to two shots on goal of Whittier's 13 total shot attempts. UCSC now posts a 0-1-1 record on the year and will continue their set of away games against Caltech on Sept. 6th at 10:00am in Pasadena, CA.
How It Happened
UCSC took only two shots in the first half in comparison to Whittier's five, but the Banana Slugs collected the only shot on goal of the half during the 21st minute, courtesy of Roman Avagimov. The only two corner kicks of the game both came early from Whittier in the ninth and 14th minutes, but the Banana Slugs scathed through without allowing a on goal from either opportunity for the Poets. At the end of the first half, Whittier led in total shot attempts with five to UCSC's two.
The second half continued to be a defensive battle, and Whittier came out firing with a shot just 37 seconds into the half. Tobias Jacobson-Bell gathered both of his saves in the second half, and earned his first of the night in the 58th minute from a shot by Whittier's Nicholas Coop. UCSC later amped up the offensive pressure starting in the 70th minute with back-to-back shots on goal, first on a free kick from Soren Groessl and followed by Erik Moreno Herrera just over a minute later.
Whittier responded with shots of their own, but Jacobson-Bell remained a wall to collect his second and final save of the night in the 77th minute. Within the last minutes of action, the Banana Slugs continued to be the aggressors offensively, but Moreno Herrera's second shot on goal was narrowly saved to keep the game scoreless. Whittier attempted two more shots in the final minutes, but ultimately could not get a clean shot on goal to close out the matchup.Â
