SPOKANE, Wash – The UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team recorded a 0-0 tie in their late afternoon matchup against Whitman University, making their record now 1-1-2. Early challenges for shots on goal from Aidan Dellinger, Alexander Ziazadeh, and Roman Avagimov put the Banana Slugs in scoring position early to intensify the offensive pressure. Whitman challenged UCSC in the second half, but Tobias Jacobson-Bell remained strong in the goal to stat two saves on the day. Up next, UC Santa Cruz faces Whitworth University on Sunday, Sept. 13th at 11:30am.

How It Happened
UCSC started the contest with the opening three shots, the first coming from Alessandro Castro. Dellinger provided the next two in the 11th and 13th minute, but neither shot could find the way through to the goal. After Whitman's only shot attempt of the half in the 26th minute, UC Santa Cruz took five additional shots in the remaining minutes of the half as the Banana Slugs looked to keep pressure applied on the Blues' defense. UCSC outshot Whitman 3-1 in shots on goal and 8-1 in total shots to show control of the game early despite not finding the back of the net.

Michael Braun came out firing to open the second half, taking the first shot 38 seconds into play. After each team traded shots, Whitman began to match UCSC's offensive aggression. Over the span of eight minutes, the Blues fired four shots on goal to help make up for only one shot attempt in all of the first half. The Banana Slugs took their first shot on goal in the 68th minute from Avagimov, and Braun swung another pair of shot attempts to maintain late pressure on the Blues. With the final minutes of play counting down, both teams amped up their intensity and sense of urgency for a final push. UC Santa Cruz took their last shot attempts in the 80th minute from Dellinger and Ziazadeh. Whitman took the last three shots of the contest, but none could get past Jacobson-Bell in the net. The Banana Slugs finished leading 15-12 in total shots and 6-2 in shots on goal.
