
Slugs Sweep Pointers and Muskies to Improve to 11-1 On the Season

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, Wis. – The UC Santa Cruz men's volleyball team improved to 10-1 on the year with a clean 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) sweep over the UW-Stevens Point Pointers on Saturday morning. Kyle Ownbey led the team with 11 kills and a .588 clip while Riley Norman and Evan Erickson both recorded 10 kills. Later in the day, the Slugs picked up another sweep to improve to 11-1, defeating Lakeland 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 27-25). Riley Norman led the team with nine kills while Drake Harris added eight kills with Logan Taylor dishing out 14 assists.

- The opening set was neck and neck with the two teams working to a 20-20 tie before the Slugs closed out the set on a 5-3 run with kills from Noy Fisher, Evan Erickson, Nick Nayak, and Kyle Ownbey.
- UCSC jumped out to a 7-3 lead to get set two going and later extended the lead to 12-6 with kills from AJ Contreras, Riley Norman, Erickson, and Nayak.
- The Pointers closed the gap to two points at 18-16 but UCSC quickly counted, using a 7-5 advantage down the stretch to take set two 25-21.
- The Banana Slugs jumped out to another 7-3 lead, this time in set three but UWSP closed the gap to two points at 9-7. The Pointers continued to play well, staying close at 21-18 but kills from Erickson, Nayak, and Logan Taylor gave UCSC the victory at 25-21 to secure the sweep.
- The Slugs jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never looked back, quickly surging to a 13-5 lead with kills from Nick Nayak, Drake Harris, Evan Erickson, Noy Fisher, and Kyle Ownbey. The Slugs were dominant from there, only allowing the Muskies to score seven more points while scoring the final 12 of their own with Conor Walsh earning the set's final kill.Â
- The Muskies struck first in set two but that didn't phase the Slugs as they quickly countered with a 10-1 run with kills from Noy Fisher and Riley Norman along with four service aces from Kyle Ownbey. The Banana Slugs outpaced Lakeland the rest of the way, using a 15-13 edge to take set two 25-14 with another set winning kill from Conor Walsh to close it out.Â
- The third set proved to be more competitive with the two teams going strike for strike to a 12-12 tie before Lakeland built a small 15-12 advantage. The Muskies continued to press, working to an 18-13 lead and later a 20-15 advantage.Â
- The Banana Slugs surged back into the set, using an 8-2 run with kills from Ownbey, Harris, and Norman to regain the lead at 23-22. The two teams fought to a 25-25 tie but Evan Erickson and Nick Nayak delivered the finals kills to secure the 27-25 win and 3-0 victory in the match.
