UC Santa Cruz Men’s Tennis Celebrates 20th Anniversary of 2005 Triple Crown with Memorable Alumni Reunion

8/21/2025 1:13:00 PM

SANTA CRUZ, Ca. — UC Santa Cruz Men's Tennis proudly welcomed back the remarkable student-athletes of the Class of 2005 for a vibrant alumni reunion commemorating the 20th anniversary of their unprecedented Triple Crown—winning the NCAA Division III national team, singles, and doubles championships.

Hosted on the very hallowed East Field Courts where the 2005 title was secured, the reunion was a spirited gathering filled with shared memories, laughter, and reflections on a season that reshaped the history of Banana Slug athletics.

A historic season worth remembering

Under legendary Head Coach Bob Hansen, the 2005 squad achieved a rare feat in collegiate tennis: capturing the Triple Crown—the NCAA team championship plus the individual singles and doubles titles—on their home courts. Led by Matt Seeberger's extraordinary performance—winning both the NCAA singles crown and, alongside partner Matt Brunner, the doubles title—the team capped off their perfect season with sweeping dominance on home soil.

Honoring a coaching legend

Coach Bob Hansen's guiding leadership defined an era of excellence. Over his 31-year tenure at UCSC (1980–2011), he led the Banana Slugs to seven NCAA Division III team championships, including the 2005 title, and produced more than 110 All-Americans—cementing a legacy of sustained excellence. His strategic brilliance and commitment created a winning culture centered around leadership by love that the current team is trying to replicate today.

Words from the current head coach

Head Coach Ross Pytko, who helped host the reunion, remarked:

"Learning from these phenomenal championship teams that Coach Hansen led has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. Connecting with the Class of 2005—players who competed in the same era I did in college—sparked my competitive drive and reminded me of what's possible when talent, teamwork, and coaching align. Their team culture and tenacious playing style continue to inspire our current Slugs."

A reunion filled with nostalgia and camaraderie

The alumni enjoyed court-side reflections, team photo ops, and stories recounted with laughter and nostalgia. Many noted how enduring friendships, life lessons, and the spirit of that championship season still resonate in their lives—two decades later.
