
Banana Slugs Claim Three Individual Titles On Day One of C2C Championships

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The UC Santa Cruz men's and women's track and field teams competed well on Day One of the C2C Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Christopher Newport University on Friday afternoon. On the men's side, the Banana Slugs brought home three gold medals in the pole vault, 10k, and long jump, putting them in second place with 56 points after the first day of competition. On the women's side, the Banana Slugs are in third place with 22 points with second and third place finishes in the 10k and pole vault. The C2C Outdoor Track and Field Championships will resume tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.

Day One Results
The Banana Slugs earned three individual titles on Day One of the Championships with Luke Holland shining in the 10,000m, finishing with a time of 32:12.76. Benthan Vu earned a third place finish in the event with a time of 32:22.16. The Banana Slugs saw Evan Hofstetter earned the men's long jump championship, opening the day with a program record jump of 6.98m on his first attempt before passing all five of his remaining jumps, winning the crown off a solo attempt with a -1.4m/s headwind. Tetsuo Eng finished as a runner up in the event with a 6.81m jump. In the pole vault, Erik Dodge made quick work on the runway, jumping 4.36m on his first attempt to claim the title. Evan Hofstetter jumped 3.86m to take third in the event for his second medal of the day. In the 100m prelims, Arthur Gainant, James Contini, and Jonathan Stenger all advance to tomorrow's finals with times of 11.02s, 11.13s, and 11.14s, respectively. In the 110m hurdles, Sotirios Kougiouris led the way with a 15.60s race to advance to the final with Erik Dodge also advancing with a 16.39 second race before sprinting straight to the pole vault runway to claim his vault title.

On the women's side, UC Santa Cruz saw a great performance in the 10,000m with Sydney Boyd earning a runner up finish after crossing the line in 40:27.34 with Ryanne Reynolds following closely behind for third place in 40:27.58. Coralie Norenberg turned in a fifth place performance with a 40:49.63, giving UC Santa Cruz 16 points in the 10k. In pole vault, Allyson Petersen recorded two personal best jumps to clear 3.08m to finish in third place. In hammer, Kailey Leba and Whitney Porter took eighth and ninth overall with throws of 29.53m and 29.20m with Porter taking eighth in shot put with a 9.18m throw. In long jump, Celine Castaneda jumped 4.85m to take ninth. In the 100m prelims, Amaya Cummins and Camille Anneet both advanced to the final with Cummins running a 12.40 second race while Anneet ran 12.72s with both runners fighting a headwind. In the 100m hurdles, Isha Kasanagottu turned in her first sub 16 second race with a time of 15.97s while Eliza Zheng ran 17.27s for the duo to advance to tomorrow's final.
