SANTA CRUZ, Ca. - Over the weekend, the UC Santa Cruz women's basketball program volunteered with the Santa Cruz G-Ball basketball league.  "G-ball is the longest running girls basketball league (in the county). This is our 30th year and we are super proud to be part of this organization. You know… in the last couple years because of Covid we had to reduce our league by 40 girls and so this year we were able to get some gyms and bring more girls back. You know the demand is huge in our county for girls who love basketball. I love Basketball. We love being part of UCSC and you guys have helped us with our assessments and it's great to be a partnership and we hope that the kids who start from third grade end up playing college ball someday." - Director of G-Ball, Leslie Scanagatta.
The Banana Slugs volunteered their time to help teach and interact with the G-Ball league in Santa Cruz, creating positive impacts on youth basketball to help G-Ball promote basketball with an emphasis on sportsmanship, respect, teamwork, and competition. Second year student-athlete Alexa Litchev participated over the weekend and said "It was so fun working with G-Ball and I love the attitude of all the young ballers. Even though people were coming from different levels, everyone was giving each other high-fives and being super supportive, which is amazing to see.".
"Connecting with Leslie and GBall is a dream partnership for our program. Leslie has been a long standing leader in youth girls basketball in Santa Cruz and we jumped at the opportunity to help out. Having our women student-athletes participate in their tryouts we hope shapes a positive image and strong desire for these young athletes to want to play college basketball." - Head coach Monica Armstrong.
"I like G-Ball because it's an all girls league, with all different types of levels. What's fun about it is that it is an all girls league and it's usually all girls coaches. It's fun to have all girls coaches because they understand what we're going through as a girl and I feel like when we have girl coaches it just helps us develop as a team. Also, I like it because I get to play harder with girls who are more developed than some and we can learn from them, which we can learn from (playing against girls with more experience and skill) and get better (at basketball)!" - Eva Rachleff, 3rd year G-Ball Player
