
Banana Slugs Drop Midweek Tilt to Chapman

ORANGE, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz women's basketball team fell to Chapman 74-69 on Wednesday afternoon at Hutton Sports Center. Emilie Ngo led the team with 18 points while Alyssa Jackson added 16 points and four assists. Danielle Tyner recorded a dominant 19-rebound performance to go along with 12 points. The Banana Slugs drop to 11-10 on the season and will be back in action on Valentine's Day when they host Cal Maritime at KP Arena at 3:00 p.m.

How It Happened
Emilie Ngo opened the scoring with a layup to give UCSC an early 2-0 lead. Chapman tied it at 2-2 and 4-4 before Alyssa Jackson knocked down a three-pointer to put the Banana Slugs ahead 7-4. Bria Tate added a jumper and a free throw while Ngo converted from the charity stripe as UCSC built a 15-11 lead after the first quarter.

The Banana Slugs continued to build momentum in the second quarter. Jackson hit back-to-back three-pointers to extend the lead to 20-11, and Tate drilled a three-pointer to make it 25-11. Tyner and Tate combined for eight points in the final minutes of the half as UCSC took a 37-27 lead into the break.

UCSC came out strong in the third quarter, pushing their largest lead of the game to 15 points at 50-35 after a Tyner layup assisted by Jackson. Ngo hit a three-pointer and added a pair of layups while Jackson drilled another three as the Banana Slugs maintained control heading into the fourth quarter with a 55-47 advantage.

Chapman stormed back in the fourth quarter, outscoring UCSC 27-14. Katie Busch knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to give the Banana Slugs a 65-56 lead, but the Panthers answered with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 65-65 on a Makena Nitao three-pointer. Sarah Reuter converted a layup to put UCSC back ahead 67-68, but Chapman closed on a 6-2 run. Ngo's layup with 23 seconds remaining cut the deficit to 69-72, but the Panthers sealed the victory at the free-throw line.
