
Mary Washington Defeats UCSC In C2C Quarterfinal

SALISBURY, Md. – The UC Santa Cruz women's basketball team saw their season come to an end following a 71-49 loss to the University of Mary Washington in the Coast-to-Coast Conference Quarterfinal on Thursday afternoon. Emilie Ngo led UCSC with 17 points and two assists while Jenna Gorton recorded 12 points with eight boards. The Banana Slugs shot 29.2% from the field and struggled from downtown, going 6-of-30 for a 20.0% three point shooting percentage.

How It Happened
Mary Washington started the game with a three point play, but Sarah Reuter quickly got UCSC on the board with a jumper just over a minute into the contest. The Eagles responded with an 8-0 before Danielle Tyner added a layup to cut the lead to 11-4. Mary Washington went on another 8-0 run, pushing their lead to 19-6 with Emilie Ngo recording the last basket. of the quarter with UCSC trailing 19-8 heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter was UCSC's highest scoring quarter of the game, recording 17 points overall but the Eagles stayed with them, recording 16 of their own. The Banana Slugs rallied midway through the quarter as a Jenna Gorton three sparked an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 31-23 with 2:16 left in the half. The Banana Slugs later pulled within seven at 32-25 with a layup from Gorton but a late three from the Eagles sent UMW into the halftime break with a 35-25 lead.

Out of the break, the two teams went an even 4-4 with Ngo recording two jumpers but UMW managed to rattle off eight straight points to go up 45-29. The Banana Slugs outscored UMW 12-10 the rest of the quarter with baskets from Ngo, Katie Busch, and Danielle Tyner but UMW carried their 55-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

Mary Washington closed out the contest convincingly, holding the Slugs to just eight points while adding 16 of their own to seal the 71-49 victory.
