CLAREMONT- The UC Santa Cruz men's tennis team had a great showing in their season opener at the ITA West Regionals held at both Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Two of UCSC's three doubles teams advanced to the Quarterfinals on Saturday, putting them two wins from All America status. First-time pair
Ryan Lam and
Praneet Varade defeated Colorado College's Andrew Kaelin and Lucas Pastor 8-6 before upsetting Chapman's seeded duo of Mac Caldwell and Caleb Wilkins 8-5.
Sam Hall and
Jason You also advanced, beating Caltech's Andrew Zabelo and Ishaan Kannan 8-7 in the first round and then turned around to win 8-5 over Redlands' team of Division I transfers Bryce Keim and Nils Plutat. The team of
Lucas Chen and
Andrew Tjoa opened the tournament by defeating Roshan Morey and Ethan Lee of Pomona-Pitzer 8-4 but dropped their second match 8-2 to No. 1 seeds Christian Settles and Matthew Robinson of Trinity (Texas).
The Banana Slugs went 4-5 overall in singles play. Hall won his first round match 7-5,6-4 over Caltech's Daniel Wen, and Varade came back to beat Occidental's Ridley Porter 2-6, 6-2, 10-6. However, both of them retired in their second round match. Lam overran Occidental's Chris Swanson 6-0, 7-6, before losing to Pomona's Luke Feng. In probably the day's craziest matchup, Tjoa was edged by Jacob De La Paz 7-6, 6-7, 11-9.
The tournament resumes Saturday morning.
