SAN FRANCISCO - UC Santa Cruz had a field (and track) day at the Mike Fanelli Classic hosted by San Francisco State University. Many competitors set PRs and put themselves into postseason competition.
The Classic opened on Thursday with
Ash Baudin placing 12th in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a new school record of 11:28.52. It was over 4 seconds better than Mimi Petersen's mark which had stood since 2013 and put Baudin in the top-ten of Division III runners this season.
On Friday, the Banana Slug success continued withÂ
Chloe Solomua setting the school record in the 100 hurdles in 15.87 seconds.
Elana Muzzy andÂ
Riley Martel-Phillips both had PRs in the 5000m to earn Top-40 finishes. Muzzy's time of 17:41.32 was good for 31st and Martel-Phillips clocked in at 17:48.30 to place 39th.
Andrea Gallardo (18:31.19) and
Sage Simms (19:06.32) also pulled off Personal Records in the grueling race.
On the final day,
Amaya Cummins placed fifth in the 100m with a PR of 12.56 seconds. It was the second-fastest time in school history. Solumua's PR of 12.94 was good for 11th and was the third fastest in school history. It was the first-time ever that two Banana Slugs ran under 13 seconds in the same race.
All-Region athlete
Abby McPhillips was fourth in her first outdoor High Jump of the year, clearing 1.53 meters (5ft 0.25 in). Freshman
Izzy Laspina was 13th in her college debut, clearing 1.43m (4ft 8.25 in).
In the meet's signature event- the Distance Medley Relay- the women's quartet of Muzzy, Martel-Phillips,
Hanna Hekkanen and
Iris Abegglen placed third in 12:29.83, ahead of three Division II schools and Division I University of the Pacific. It was the fastest time ever for a UCSC relay in that event.
The men's team also had several great performances, highlighted by
Eric Anderson adding the school's 1500m record to the 800m mark he set earlier this season. The freshman from Folsom opened Friday's session finishing in 3:56.77 to better
Kellen O'Neill's old standard by 0.35 seconds. Fellow newcomer
Eric Jackson also set a school record on Friday. His 5000m time of 14:39.15 was 4.24 seconds better than Tyler Holt's mark from 2013.
Saturday saw another school record asÂ
Daniel Browne finished the 110m High Hurdles in 15.60 seconds, 0.37 faster than the old mark set in 2019. Browne placed 7th in the event, one of three PRs he had over the weekend.
Holden Spencer finished sixth in the 800m in 1:54.45, the second-fastest mark ever by a Banana Slug. Anderson was 18th in 1:56.64.
Jonathan Stenger (11.12 seconds) and
James Contini (11.24) placed eighth and tenth in the 100 meters respectively. It was the two fastest times in the 100m dash for the Banana Slugs in 13 years.
Shea Wissler was runner-up in the High Jump at 1.79m (5ft 10.5 in). Browne was 5th with a height of 1.74m (5ft 8.5 in).
