Men place first in team points, women are seventh.
SAN FRANCISCO - UC Santa Cruz continued their outdoor season with a full squad competing at the Johnny Mathis Invite hosted by San Francisco State.
With over twenty athletes on both teams getting to compete, the depth paid off as the men's team finished 1st with 140 total points and the women were 7th, scoring 56.
It's the men's first Invite championship in the program's modern era.
In the men's competition, Ethan Bizzack broke his own school record in the 200 meters with a time of 22.38 despite running into a headwind. That won his heat and was good for 3rd overall. Jonathan Stenger and Jack Kibort were 5th and 8th with PRs of 22.61 and 23.20 respectively.
Kibort's PR of 11.47 won his heat in the 100m dash and was good enough for 8th overall. Tanishq Patil placed 10th in 11.52.
Bizzack broke his school record and ran a leg on the 4x400 relay Eric Jackson was second in the 1500m with a new school record of 3:55.35. Rowan Davis and Cole Pena went 5-6 in the 400m, finishing in 51.78 and 52.69 respectively. Daniel Browne was 2nd in his 400 hurdles debut, finishing in 1:00.22. Vance Byer placed 2nd in the 800m in 1:57.88. Brett Bailey was 4th in his 800m debut after crossing in 1:59.36 while Adam Goldberg was 8th in 2:02.09. Walter Teitelbaum (15:03.67) and Casey Orton (15:11.84) ran for PRs in the 5000m to place 2nd and 6th respectively. In the men's 3000 Steeplechase, Camden Hebert improved his personal best by 23 seconds, finishing in 9:54.20.Â
Highlights for the women included Amaya Cummins setting the school record in the 200m with her time of 26.16, breaking the record set last year by 0.22 seconds and placing 3rd. Abby McPhillips won her second straight high jump competition, clearing 1.53m (5ft 0.25in) on her second attempt of the day. McPhillips was also 3rd in her 400 hurdles debut in 1:09.05, while Mackenzie Jones hit a PR in 1:12.13 for 5th.

In the women's 1500m, Riley Martel-Phillips was 6th in a PR of 4:45.24, 2.15 seconds better than her previous best time. Andrea Gallardo was 15th in 4:55.08 and Elana Muzzy was 16th 0.49 seconds after her. Lauren Delgado's PR of 5:00.89 completed the Banana Slugs' metric mile quartet. Sophia Cervantes Llamas (1:01.68) and Caroleene Block (1:02.89) went 4-5 overall in the 400m, with Cervantes Llamas winning her heat. Iris Abegglen set the school freshman record in the 5000m, finishing 6th in 18:07.94. Monica Fonseca was 10th in her 3000 Steeplechase debut, finishing 10th in 12:58.45.
UC Santa Cruz has one last warmup before Conference when they travel south to Salinas next weekend for the Hartnell College Open.
