
Banana Slugs open outdoor season with great times at Stanislaus

UC Santa Cruz tests themselves in their traditional opener at the Kim Duyst Invitational
TURLOCK, CA- UC Santa Cruz opened their outdoor track and field season at the Kim Duyst Invite hosted by Stanislaus State. Facing a mostly Division II field, the Banana Slugs turned in many PRs as they got to stretch their legs and arms.
Andrea Gallardo was 6th in her college debut in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:28.88. In the 1500m, Gallardo finished 7th in 5:00.14, while Hanna Hekkanen was 14th in 5:06.62.
Chloe Solomua was 14th in the 200m with a wind-aided time of 26.89. Later, Solomua along with Caroleene Block, Sophia Cervantes Llamas and Caitlin Donovan were in the 4x400 meter relay squad that placed fourth in 4:16.14. Cervantes Llamas was also 13th in the 400 meters in 1:04.90.
For the men, James Contini was fourth in his 200m debut in 22.60, just 0.07 from the school record. Other outstanding performances included Vance Byer coming within 0.02 of the school record in the 800 meters, finishing in 1:56.76 to place second. Aaron Hillberg was fifth in 1:59.
Casey Orton was fifth in the 1500, crossing the line in 4:06.74.
The full Banana Slug squad competes again in two weeks when they go to the state capital for the Sac State Invitational.
