
Swim and Dive open season at Slug Shootout

Men place first and women are second
The women and men Swimming and Diving squads got the 2022-23 season started in a big way this weekend, as they hosted the Slug Shootout at the East Field House Pool.
All 32 women on the roster competed this weekend, amassing a two-day score of 624 points to place second. Cal State East Bay was first with 634 and Concordia of Irvine was third among the eight schools with 443. The diving portion brought a big point boost as UC Santa Cruz went 1-2-3 in the 1-meter dive. Sachiko Correa scored 250.60 points, followed by Maya Teaford (169.55) and Isabella Polena (153.65).
Standout newcomer performances on Saturday included Piper Stickler finishing fourth in the 1650 Free in 18:49.5, Coralie Norenberg coming in third in both the 50 Back (28.17) and 50 Free (25.06), and Marie Lucquet placing fifth in the 200 Breaststroke in 2:34.62.
The men easily outpointed five other schools with a two-day total of 646.5 points. Southwestern Oregon was second with 486 and Concordia was third with 439. UC Santa Cruz kept compiling points in the sixteen events on Saturday to keep their lead from Day One.
Massimo Reyna and Samuel Smith went 1-2 in the 200 Free on Saturday. Reyna hit the wall in 1:44.39 with Smith finishing in 1:45.27. Andrew Keidel won the 1-meter dive with 181.70 points, with Joel Akey runner-up with 178.95. Marco Frank was runner-up in the 500 Free in his debut, finishing in 4:56.69. The 200 Free Relay quartet of Drake Southern, Briggs Cloutier, Reyna and Smith closed the day with a second place finish in 1:27.67.
The Banana Slugs will next compete in three weeks when they travel to the La Verne Invite.
