STOCKTON- UC Santa Cruz swim and dive opened the 2021-22 season at the Pacific Invitational, with both the men and women competing in tri-meets.
The Banana Slug women placed second with 121 points, behind the host Tigers (291.50)Â and beating San Jose State (112.50).
The men totaled 116.50 points to Cal's 244 and the host Tigers scoring 187.50.
But beyond the scores, the youthful Banana Slugs were happy to have a good swim.
"The PAC Invite was a great way to open the season. Competing against D1 teams allows us to swim loose in a no pressure environment," said head coach Matt Crawford.
In his first college race, Adam Shabaan won the men's 1000 Free in 10:06.52, over 9 seconds better than second place Ricky Lewis of Pacific. Fellow freshman Finnegan Lear was 3rd in 10:18.36 and Presley Golling was 4th in 10:18.76.
Drake Southern had a great debut in the 100 Free with a time of 49:13. As did Collin McColl who finished in 50.08. Returner Joe Guzman was third in both the 100 amd 200 Breaststroke.
"Adam opened the individual swims on the men's side with an outright win at a D1 meet, winning a hard fought 1000 free," Crawford said. "That kicked off a great day of racing, with the Slugs battling in every race and putting down some impressive times for an early season meet. Joe Guzman continues to impress in the early season, touching out a Cal swimmer in a very close 200 breaststroke."
Standouts for the women included Maddy Gruender, who finished 3rd in the 200 Free in 1:56.18 and 2nd in the 100 in 54:12.
VIvi Raker was 2nd in the 100 Fly in 58.73. Elisabeth Lundgren was 4th in the 100 Back in 1:01.71, Hannah Brazier was 6th in 1:03.70 and Pia Davila placed 7th (1:04.85) and Meg Carrington was 8th in 1:07.02.
"Maddy impressed with a second place finish in the 100 free. Hannah Brazier had two lifetime bests on the day, Tereza Shea and Aaron Wu each had one," Crawford explained.Â
"We seldom see PRs in October. It was a fun way to start the season and we're looking forward to seeing some D2 and D3 competition next weekend."
The teams next have a weekend double, hosting the Slug Shootout on Friday and competing in the Bay Area Invite at Mills on Saturday.
