#5 Tigers Blank Banana Slugs

SAN ANTONIO (10-28) – The Banana Slugs played their first of two matches in the state of Texas as they took on NSCAA/NCAA Division III #5 Trinity University in San Antonio. The Tigers scored four goals in the second en route to a 5-0 win.

Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost 2-0 to San Francisco State University on Monday in Santa Cruz while the Tigers lost to Texas Lutheran University 3-2 in Sequin on Sunday.

In the first half, the Tigers would score their first goal within the first minute of the match. Austin Michaelis took a pass from Kellen Reid and hit the back of the net with his shot as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead with 44:05 left in the half. The final chance for the Banana Slugs to score before halftime came with 14:54 left in the half on a Nathaniel Payne header but the shot was blocked. The Tigers led 1-0 at halftime.

In the second half, the Tigers would add their first goal of the half with 25:23 left in regulation. Daniel Ruano took a pass from Brent Mandelkorn and shot the ball into the back of the net to expand the Tigers' lead to 2-0. Less than two minutes later of clock time later, Francisco Vasquez would score to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead with 23:44 left. The Tigers would add another goal with 13:40 left in regulation on a Laurence Wyke off an assist by Todd Edwards. The Tigers would score their last goal with 8:28 left on a Ryan Hunter shot to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead. The final chance for the Banana Slugs to get on the scoreboard was a header by Payne with 2:08 left in regulation but the shot was saved by Tigers' goalie Chris Morrish. Trinity won 5-0 to extend the Banana Slugs' winless streak to five.

Sam Horton and Payne both had two shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for Trinity, Hunter had a match high eight shots. Todd Whittaker got the win for the Tigers while Christian Deguzman got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Tigers outshot the Banana Slugs 33-5 and the Tigers had eleven more corner kicks (13-2) than did the Banana Slugs.

The next match for Banana Slugs will be Sunday as they take on Southwestern University in Georgetown. Kickoff is set for 10 am.
