SANTA CRUZ, Ca. – On sunny Santa Cruz senior day at the Lower East Field, the UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team capped off the regular season in fashion as they earned a dominant 7-0 victory over the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers on Sunday afternoon. The Banana Slugs saw a brace from
Joaquin Greenberg along with goals from
Michael Braun,
Roman Fiechter,
Jake Kluka,
Soren Groessl, and
Chad Lyon. With the victory, the Slugs end the regular season with an overall record of 9-6-1 and they'll return to action on Nov. 6 when they travel to Newport News, Va. for the C2C Men's Soccer Conference Championship.
How It Happened
After just six minutes of action,
Michael Braun ripped a shot into the side netting to put UC Santa Cruz up 1-0 early.
Joaquin Greenberg struck just under three minutes later, sneaking his shut through the keeper's legs to double UCSC's lead to 2-0. The remainder of the first half was scoreless, but the Banana Slugs controlled the action as they outshot Cal Maritime 8-2 in the opening 45 minutes.
UC Santa Cruz opened the flood gates in the second half as
Roman Fiechter connected in the 56th minute to make it 3-0.
Jake Kluka and
Soren Groessl scored in the 61st and 68th minute to keep the action going as UCSC took a 5-0 lead. The Slugs didn't slow down as Greenberg connected for the second time of the day, scoring in the 80th minute. Just over a minute later,
Chad Lyon put the finishing touches on scoring, putting the Banana Slugs up 7-0 en route to a dominant senior day victory.
