Slugs Drop C2C Semifinal Match to Captains

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team fell 2-0 to the Christopher Newport Captains in the C2C Conference Semifinal on Friday evening in Virginia. The Banana Slugs fell behind in the 11th minute after a near sided goal from the Captains with CNU adding an insurance goal off a free kick in the 63rd minute. The Slugs outshot CNU 18-11 overall, but the Captains had the shots on goal advantage at 5-3. CNU also created more opportunities with eight corners to UCSC's two.

How It Happened
The UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs were knocking on the door first as Avery Edgar and Michael Braun took the game's first shots in the 9th and 10th minute but Edgar's first shot was blocked while Braun's attempt went high. The Captains were able to counter, forcing Tobias Jacobson-Bell to make a save in the 11th minute before earning a corner. Off the corner, CNU managed to find the ball inside the box and strike the back of the net at the 10:46 mark to take a 1-0 lead.

The Slugs still managed to outshoot CNU 12-8 in the half but didn't force the Captains to make any saves in the half as CNU took their 1-0 lead into halftime. Out of the break, both teams traded possession through the midfield before the Captains earned a free kick in the 63rd minute. The Captains sent in a long shot that skipped just in front of the goal before finding its way into the back of the net, doubling the CNU lead to 2-0. The Slugs were able to take eight more shots in the contest, forcing CNU to make four saves. Unfortunately, the Banana Slugs were unable to get any offense going as they fell to the Captains 2-0 in the C2C Conference Semifinal.
