
Banana Slugs Take First at the University of Portland

PORTLAND, Or. – The UC Santa Cruz men's track and field team opened their 2026 indoor campaign at the University of Portland, winning the meet with 39 team points overall. The Slugs earned victories in both the 800m and the 4x400m relay and will be back in action February 6-8 at the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nevada.

In the Results
The Banana Slugs got off to a great start, winning the 800m as first year Sean Conley clocked a 1:57.28 with first year Caeden Gardner taking second in 1:57.62. Taran Grewal nearly broke sub two minutes in his collegiate debut, going 2:00.51 to take sixth. In the mile, Gavin Hahn took fifth overall with a time of 4:23.72 while Viktor Kieturakis took sixth in 4:25.68. Desi Herrerias and Gilbert Fillat had a close battle at the line with Herrerias taking eighth in 4:26.00 while Fillat crossed in ninth at 4:26.11. The Banana Slugs closed out the meet with a victory in the 4x400m relay as Fillat, Gardner, Sasha Tanasychuk, and Conley combined for a time of 3:33.73.
