Men 1st, women 3rd as Banana Slugs run well at Hayward

HAYWARD, CA (4-13) --Â The UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs came to perform during the Chuck Buettner Twilight at Chabot College. Competing against Division I and II opponents, the men finished first overall among teams with 202 points and the women were third with 120 points.
Starting with the track events, Akira Jones placed second in the women's 100m hurdles event with a 17.43 (PR). Jones also placed second overall with a PR in the Long Jump (5.04m / 16 ft 6.5 in.). Sotirios Kougiouris won 1st overall in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 16.28, with Erik Dodge placing second with a time of 17.35. Caitlin Donovan, the school record holder in the 400m, put in some extra steps with a debut in the 800m and finished fourth overall in 2:22.33.
Amaya Cummins won second overall in the women's 200m with a time of 26.44. Jonathan Stenger and James Contini both turned in PRs to produce a 1-2 finish in the 100m dash. Stenger hit the tape in 11.00 flat and Contini finished in 11.02. The times were the program's fastest runs since 2009. Stenger and Contini also finished 2-3 in the 200m with the pair each running the race in 22.81.
Kenzie Seymour won first overall in her women's 3000m Steeplechase debut with a time of 11:22.45. Seymour was seventh in the Javelin throwing 23.39m (76 ft 9 in.). Fellow first-year Kailey Leba was sixth in both the Javelin with a mark of 24.79m (81 ft 4 in.) as well as the Discus with a mark of 23.79m (78 ft 1 inch). Elena Stanciu won third overall in the women's 1500m with a time of 4:44.88. Casey Orton and teammate Camden Jaureguy had a 1-2 finish in the men's 1500m with times of 4:04.84 for Orton and 4:05.00 for Jaureguy.
On the field side, Grant Nyhus won first overall in men's Long Jump with a distance of 6.43m (21 ft. 2.4 in.). Erik Dodge won first overall in men's Pole Vault with a height of 4.25m (13 ft. 11.25in), and Tetsuo Eng joined his teammates by claiming first in men's High Jump with a height of 1.80m (5 ft. 11 in.). Jeremy Hall and Kyland Minyard also scored big with PRs in the Shot Put. Hall was second with a throw of 10.92m (35 ft 10 in.) while Minyard was fifth with a toss of 9.85m (32 ft 3.75 in).
The Banana Slugs have one more warmup before Conference when they head north next weekend for the Chico State Twilight.
