LOS ANGELES- Racing against some of the best competition on the West Coast, the UC Santa Cruz Swim and Dive teams finished a three-day weekend at the La Verne Winter Invite.
The men scored a total of 1,009 points and placed sixth out of ten schools. The women were eighth out of fourteen with 549.50 points. The Winter Invite amounted to a preview of the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference meet that will be held at the same pool in April. Eight of UC Santa Cruz's conference rivals were in the field, as were three Division III schools.
The Banana Slug women set another school record to wrap up the meet on Sunday. Three swimmers- Maddy Gruender, Coralie Norenberg and Tereza Shea- added the 400 Free Relay record to their accolades after also being 75% of the school record in the 200 Free Relay to open the Invite. The trio were joined Sunday by Keaton Canaday to set a new standard of 3:30.66, good for fourth place. The time was 0.82 seconds faster than the previous school record set in 2022. Norenberg was also 11th in the 100 Free with a time of 52.33. Kirsten Boyle was 10th in the 200 Breaststroke in 2:25.82, while Gabrielle Nguyen was 12th in 2:28.36.
Men's highlights in the pool Saturday included Bryson Schmid placing 11th in the 200 Free with a time of 1:42.76, while Morgan Madril was fourth in the 100 Fly after touching the wall in 50.07. In the 100 Breaststroke, Karsten Hsiao was 12th in 58.58. The 800 Free Relay quartet of Schmid, Madril, Jude Robinson, and Luke Scanlon finished 9th in 7:04.45.
Robinson and Scanlon continued their success on Sunday, placing fifth and sixth in the 200 Butterfly. Robinson touched the wall in 1:53.66 and Scanlon finished 0.12 seconds later. Hsiao placed fifth in the 200 Breaststroke in 2:07.03, and Massimo Reyna was sixth in the 100 Free in 46.57.
The Banana Slugs will close out the Fall with the intrasquad Blue Gold Meet on December 2nd.
