Box Score ANGWIN- Five different goalscorers got on the board as UC Santa Cruz made the most of their opportunities in a 5-0 season-opening win over host Pacific Union College.
"It was a challenge to navigate the heat and unpredictable surface of the field," said Interim Head Coach
Lilia Dosalmas "but we were able to build moments, stay disciplined, and stay organized."
It took a little over a minute for UC Santa Cruz to take the lead as
Bronwyn Eyre got on the end of a
Julia Hernandez pass to make it 1-0.
Karina Bulli and
Ana Villa scored within 2:30 of each other to give UC Santa Cruz a 3-0 halftime lead.
Just under four minutes into the second half,
Amanda Scott made it 4-0 off a beauty of an assist from goalkeeper
Alyssa Diaz-Tucker.
Â
"Alyssa found the target player off of a distribution," Dosalmas explained. "Amanda was even with the last defender, and was able to jump up and get a header off of the first bounce and catch both the backline and the keeper off guard for an exciting finish as it sailed right over her outstretched arms."
Â
Sophomore
Arianna LePage finished UC Santa Cruz's scoring with under nine minutes left.
Both teams had eight shots each, but the Banana Slugs ended up converting all five of their shots on goal while the Pioneers had three shots on target.
Makenna Curtis had two saves in her college debut before giving way to Diaz-Tucker in the second half.
Â
The Banana Slugs have their home opener on Saturday afternoon when they host Emerson College of Massachusetts at the Lower East Field.
