UC Santa Cruz and Emerson College battled for 90 minutes in the warm California sunshine, but neither could find the net in the 0-0 draw.
 Â
UC Santa Cruz went to 1-0-1 on the year, as did the Lions from Boston, Massachusetts.
Late in the first half, Banana Slug First Year Camille Anneet had two good chances in rapid succession. Her 37th minute shot was pushed over by Emerson goalie Amara Schaub. On the resulting corner, Anneet had another opportunity but pushed the shot wide.
The Banana Slugs started the second half hot, and almost scored 37 seconds after the restart. However, First Year Tatiana Fernandez had her shot saved. Amanda Scott had a good opportunity in the 52nd minute that was saved by the Lions. Another First Year, Sydney Boyd, had a breakaway in the 84th minute that was pushed out by Schaub for another corner kick. Payton Cichowski had the last opportunity for the Banana Slugs, but her last minute close-range shot went high.Â
Overall, the Banana Slugs had a 14-12 shot advantage over the Lions. Goalkeeper Makenna Curtis had two saves for her first career complete-game shutout.
UC Santa Cruz is in action next weekend when they welcome Puget Sound and Pomona-Pitzer to the Lower East Field.
