UC Santa Cruz dropped a hard-fought 1-0 game to old rival Menlo College Wednesday afternoon at the Lower East Field.
UC Santa Cruz falls to 1-4-1 on the season, but played probably their most spirited game of the campaign so far. The Banana Slugs almost took the lead right before halftime, but
Cole Simes's rocket from the edge of the box hit the crossbar and the rebound was sent high.
Menlo scored on what would be their last shot of the game, when Caden Mink finished his long run on the right and slotted home a goal to give the Oaks the lead in the 57th minute.
The Slugs turned up the pressure looking for the equalizer, and hit the crossbar again 17 minutes into the second half before Menlo scrambled the ball away.
UC Santa Cruz had one last chance in the 84th minute, but
Kailas Dhond had his goal called back for offside and the Banana Slugs couldn't get another shot before the horn sounded.
Overall, the Banana Slugs had a 11-8 shot advantage, including 6-2 in the second half. 37 fouls were committed (23 by the visitors) with one yellow card given to each team.
UC Santa Cruz next plays Saturday night on the road at Cal Lutheran.
