BROWNWOOD, TEXAS - The ninth-ranked UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs finished third at the 2021 American Southwest Conference championships with a two-day team score of 652.
The previous best showing for UCSC was fourth place in 2016. Freshman Mikaela Paracuelles finished tied for sixth with a 13-over-157. It was the highest-finish and best score for a UCSC golfer since they joined the league in 2013-14.
Paracuelles's first day score of 71 was the best-ever first round score for any Banana Slug in program history.
The Banana Slugs entered the tournament ranked fifth in the West Region, right behind conference rivals UT-Dallas (3rd) and Mary Hardin-Baylor(4th). That was the finish , as UT Dallas finished with a team score of 626 to win the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAAs. UMHB, paced by medalist Sydney McConnell, was second with 645, seven strokes ahead of the Banana Slugs.
Alyssa Yee finished in 16th place with a 23-over 167. Riley Birch and Sarah Donovan finished tied for 18th one stroke back with a 168. Gillian Mendoza rounded out the Slug contingent with a 169 to place 20th.
The Banana Slugs fly to another "conference championship" next week when they are scheduled to participate in the Coast-To-Coast Cup at the famous Greenbriar course in White Sulphur Springs, WV.
