Young Slugs battle Northwest Conference trio to start Fall Season
WALLA WALLA, WA - Six UC Santa Cruz women's tennis players made their college debuts over the weekend at the Whitman College Fall Invitational
UC Santa Cruz defeated Puget Sound on Friday 8-1 and Whitworth 6-3 on Saturday.
The young Banana Slugs finished the weekend with a competitive 5-4 loss to hosts Whitman on Sunday.
"Coach Jack (Ventura-Cruess) & I are so proud of the amazing intensity & fight of our young team!" said head coach AJ Jensen. "Our Slugs are still babies - most of them just arrived in Santa Cruz & are still settling in to college life. This team has learned & improved so much in just a few short weeks."
The Banana Slugs took four first-year players to Washington- Julia Azzi, Isabella Chacon, Natalie Sprenger and Sara Beckman. Two players - Tanner Rowland and Isabella Francis - were on the squad last year but didn't get to play. Returners Sam Scarlett and Angelina Powers anchored the team for their first road trip.
After two victories over Puget Sound and Whitworth, the Banana Slugs met a determined Whitman squad Sunday morning. The host Blues won the doubles matches 2-1 and then held off the Banana Slugs in the singles matchups.
"We are going to hit the practice courts hard and use today's match as motivation for future matchups with teams like Whitman," Jensen said.
The Banana Slugs continue their Fall season on Friday October 15th when they play in a Northern California open tournament at West Valley College.
