Hernandez penalty gives women's soccer 1-0 win at Whittier

Box Score

WHITTIER - After going four years without beating a SCIAC school on the road, UC Santa Cruz has made it two wins in two weeks.

Midfielder Julia Hernandez converted an 85th-minute penalty to give the Banana Slugs a 1-0 win at Whittier.

UCSC goes to 2-1-1 on the season with their second 1-0 win over a SCIAC team. After breaking an 0-for-16 streak against the league, UC Santa Cruz now has a three-game non-losing streak against the conference.

The two teams were evenly matched throughout the game, with both defenses holding.

After Whittier was whistled for a penalty with 5:55 left, Hernandez cooly slotted the ball home for her first collegiate goal and the eventual game-winner.

The Poets (0-2-1) had one last chance with 2:06 left, but Isabela Vargas had her shot saved by Alyssa Diaz-Tucker. Diaz-Tucker finished with five saves for her second shutout this season.

UCSC finishes the two-game road trip Saturday morning at first-time opponent Cal Tech.
