SALISBURY, Md. – With a trip to the 2025 C2C Women's Soccer Conference Championship on the line, the UC Santa Cruz women's soccer team delivered a 1-0 victory over the Mary Washington Eagles on Friday afternoon. The lone goal came by way of a penalty kick off the foot of
Camille Anneet in the 8th minute. UC Santa Cruz will take on the Christopher Newport Captains in a rematch of last year's Championship where the Banana Slugs earned a 2-0 victory to claim the program's first ever C2C Conference Championship title. UCSC and CNU will get a day of rest before playing the Championship game on Sunday morning at 7am PST or 9am PST.
How It Happened
The opening moments of action featured back and forth play with Mary Washington sending the ball deep into the attacking third with the Slugs' defense doing well to win possession and work out of the pressure. UC Santa Cruz earned the game's first corner at the 5:10 mark but couldn't get a shot off.
The Slugs continued to pressure in the early going with
Camille Anneet taking the game's first shot at the 7:06 mark with the attempt getting saved. Anneet was fouled in the process, sending her to take a penalty kick. Anneet stepped up and delivered a well driven ball to the back of net, giving UC Santa Cruz the 1-0 lead right out of the gate. Anneet had a shot blocked in the 11th minute while
Kristi Truong missed high in the 17th. From there, Mary Washington controlled the rest of the half as they took four shots with two off the crossbar while
Ainsley Gove was forced to make two saves, keeping UCSC in the lead at 1-0 heading into halftime.
Out of the halftime break, the Banana Slugs were held to just one shot while the Eagles rattled off nine shots of their own. The tension was high, but UMW only put three shots on goal with Gove making a save while one attempt was saved by the team with the last attempt in the 87th minute getting blocked. Despite the heavy pressure, the Slugs earned the 1-0 victory over Mary Washington to earn another trip to the C2C Conference Championship.
