SANTA CRUZ - The 2017 UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs lost both games in the season opening 2017 Slugfest Classic.

On Friday, UCSC lost in overtime 3-2 to the Milwaukee School of Engineering. UCSC took an early lead  in the 13th minute on a goal from junior Cole Fox. It was the Alaska native's first career goal.

The Engineers struck back nine minutes after halftime on a goal from Rade Novakovich. In the 66th minute, Novakovich gave the Engineers the lead off an assist from Sean Tabbert. The Slugs pressed for the equalizer and were rewarded in the 87th minute with a blast from James Allison  to cleanup a corner kick scramble.

The game went into overtime, and the Engineers' Braden Andryk drew and converted penalty 5:24 in to give the visitors the win.

On Sunday against Berry College, UCSC once again opened with the lead from a goal by Fox, who headed in James McCarty's cross to the right post. The Vikings responded however with three unanswered goals. The Slugs pulled one back when Jacob Myers Norys finished off a corner kick with a minute left. The Vikings held out and held possession to run out the clock for their second win in California.

Christian Deguzman got the start as goalkeeper in Friday's season opener and finished with a save in ninety-five minutes. Andrew Pimentel got the call in the second game and had four saves.

UC Santa Cruz seeks their first win of the young year next week on a three-game road trip in Oregon starting with Pacific University Friday.
