Banana Slugs Draw with Panthers

SANTA CRUZ (9-22) - The Banana Slugs completed their two match homestand as they took on Chapman University. Each team scored a goal in each half and the two teams tied at 2-2.

Both teams won their last match. The Banana Slugs won 3-1 over NCAA Division II Holy Names University on Saturday in Santa Cruz while the Panthers won 4-1 over Whittier College in Orange on Wednesday.

In the first half, the Banana Slugs would score first. Dominique Royall would score off a pass from reigning Association of Division III Independents Men's Soccer Player of the Week Jacob Myers Norys to give the Banana Slugs a 1-0 lead with 31:04 left in the half. With 9:28 left in the half, Chapman would tie the match at 1-1 on a goal by Kal Howe.

In the second half, the Banana Slugs would go on top early. Royall would score on a header off a pass from Aldan Durgerian to give the Banana Slugs a 2-1 lead with 43:10 left in the match. With 16:32 left, Chapman would tie the match at 2-2. on a Justo Garcia goal. Cole Fox had the final shot of regulation for the Banana Slugs but his shot was saved by Panthers' goalie Sean Augustine. The two teams were tied at 2-2 headed into overtime. 

In the first overtime, the match was played primarily in the Panthers' offensive zone. The Panthers had three shots on the half, but all three were either blocked or wide. The second overtime was much the same with the Panthers outshooting the Banana Slugs 3-1 in the second additional period. The Banana Slugs had their final chance to score with thirty-four seconds left but Myers Norys' shot went just high of the frame. The tie extended the Banana Slugs' unbeaten streak to three. The tie also extends the Banana Slugs' unbeaten streak against the Panthers which extends back to the 2014 season.  

Three players (Keith McCarty, Myers Norys and Royall) had two shots apiece to lead the Banana Slugs while for Chapman, Garcia had a match high six shots. Christian Deguzman, for the Banana Slugs, and Augustine, for the Panthers, earned ties for their respective teams. The Panthers outshot the Banana Slugs 19-7. The two teams combined for a total of thirty-nine fouls and three yellow cards.

The Banana Slugs will have their next two matches away from home. The next match for the Banana Slugs will be Wednesday as they take on California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Kickoff is set for 5 pm.
