Four different goal scorers help Banana Slugs to first win of the year

Box Score

NEWBERG, OREGON - Four different players scored as UC Santa Cruz erased an early deficit and defeated George Fox 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

UCSC goes to 1-4 while George Fox is 2-4.

"The guys played with a lot of heart and desire which helped them take control of the game. A number of guys stepped up and helped us secure our first win of the season," according to head coach Michael Runeare.

The Slugs used their bench well, with newcomers Haruki Kurosawa, Ari Sidman and Gerald Delorie all making their first start of the season as did junior Dominique Royall.

However, it was still a rough start as the Bruins scored first. Daniel Alonso fired a shot that Delorie could not control and pounced on the rebound to give the hosts a 1-0 lead 19 minutes in.

The Slugs struck back less than 20 minutes later in quick succession. James Allison got on the end of a Joey Cressa cross and tied it 10:50 before halftime. Then, three minutes later, Aidan Durgerian gave UCSC a 2-1 lead off a header to cleanup a corner kick scramble.

The Slugs got a two-goal lead 15:31 after halftime. Cole Fox slotted home his team-leading 3rd goal of the year after a long dribble. It was UCSC's first 3-goal game of the season. George Fox pushed ahead to get back into it, but the Slug defense held and Delorie had great saves in the 66th and 73rd minute to help UCSC maintain their advantage. Jacob Myers Norys finished off scoring in the final minute for the final score.

"The backline of Gozashti, Makhamreh, Allison, Laird and Cien-Meyer played great," Runeare said. "We have been very competitive the first four games, but we kept coming up short. It's great to finish off this week long trip with a win."

George Fox had a slight 12-11 shot advantage but Delorie finished with four saves in his debut performance for the win.

UCSC returns home to face Division II Holy Names on Saturday afternoon.
