A 79th minute goal by Justin Funes was all the scoring as UC Santa Cruz lost 1-0 to the University of La Verne on the start of a two-game Southern California trip.

The Banana Slugs fall to 3-3-3 while La Verne won their fourth straight and are now 10-2.

Funes's goal was one of only two shots on frame for the Leopards all game as the Banana Slugs kept possession for most of the game.

Overall UCSC outshot their hosts 8-5 and had 4 corners to La Verne's 2.

The Slugs regroup and take the field at 2pm Sunday when they play Antelope Valley in Lancaster.
