Slugs Get Two Late Goals from Degrasse to Win at East Bay

Box Score

HAYWARD, CA -- Tim Degrasse (JR, Santa Cruz, CA) scored two goals in the span of 7 minutes to send the Slugs past Cal State East Bay for the second time this season. Down 2-0 early in the first half the Slugs faced an uphill battle, after East Bay scored through Frank Quintana, and Mohammed Airuwayshid.

However, the Slugs came to life just before the half on a goal from Theo Parada (FR, El Dorado Hills, CA). Parada was able to glance a header into the back of the net from a free kick from Davin Kono (JR, Encinitas, CA). Down by one goal the Slugs pushed for an equalizer before the half time interval but were turned away by East Bay keeper Kristopher Hall.

In the second half the Slugs came out and dominated the game in possession and opportunities, getting 10 shots off in the second period. However, they were again turned away by Hall, and the frame of the goal several times. However, the dam finally broke in the 87th min, when Jason Lent (JR, Bell Canyon, CA) broke free on the right hand side and slotted a ball across the goal to Degrasse who tapped the ball in from 2 yards out. Degrasse's goal was well deserved and a result of several great opportunities in the second half.

With the score tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, the game headed to overtime. Again the Slugs came out and dominated the chances, nearly winning the game with their first attacking move of the period. Dan Seltzer (FR, Danville, CA) got behind the Pioneer defense and was 1v1 with the keeper, but pulled his shot wide of the target.

The goal would come several minutes later in one of the best displays of attacking play this year. Evan Chambers (SO. Healdsburg, CA) picked the ball up deep in the Slugs' defensive half, and carried the ball past several Pioneer defenders down the left side of the field, squaring the ball to Kono, Chambers continued his run forward and received the ball back from Kono. Chambers then played the ball forward to an on running Kenny Johnson (FR. Bakersfield, CA) who back healed the ball to Degrasse who was waiting 1v1 with the goalkeeper. Degrasse made no mistakes, stroking the ball into the right upper corner.

With the win the Slugs move to 7-5-2 on the year and 7-3-2 in NCAA Division III play.
